Tutorial: Xgen Hair for Characters

Hey everyone.

I know I have been meaning to finish my skin tutorial, but to wrap up the character I wanted to give him some hair and I decided to dive right into Xgen for Maya. I came up with a pretty solid workflow and thus thought I would put out a tutorial while it was still fresh in my mind.

Here is the link to the tutorial: https://gumroad.com/l/avAxQ

Watch the youtube video for some more info on the tutorial.

Enjoy

Tutorial: Texturing and Look Dev for Production

Hey guys!

I finally finished my latest tutorial, Texturing and Look Dev for Production.

In this tutorial I go through in detail my process of texturing and shading an asset for a production environment.

If you are interested, find out more through this link: https://gumroad.com/l/AAFCk

I hope you guys enjoy it and learn something new!

Here is my finished Orc piece, which inspired the creation of the tutorial, and still renders of the final helmet asset, generated in the tutorial series.

Orc Update

Just an update of my orc piece.

This is just a crop of the final image.
Just need to make a few more touch ups and then onto some tutorials to explain my process and workflow ;)

Also thought I would throw in some detail shots.

Orc Bust WIP

So I have been working on the orc bust consistently for the last couple of months in my free time (which is only a couple of hours a day) to try and get this character across the line. You might recognize this guy from about a year ago in my blog. I ended up opening the zbrush file just to grab a piece of armor and then started reworking the form and armor to the point where I thought I should finally take it to a final piece.

Still working on the background for now, but here is a render of where the orc is at, along with a few WIP renders from along the way.

Hopefully I can get this one across the line for good!

Ant-Man

Hey peeps!

Long time no blogging.
Anyway, the blu-ray of Ant-Man came out a couple of days ago, and that means that I can legally share some of the shots I worked on.

I got to do more assets and look dev on this film than I have any other film before it. I even got to throw in a 'easter egg', see if you can pick it up.

So here goes!

The water pipe sequence was my biggest asset on the whole film. It was a process that went for about 2 months.

It was my responsibility to help design, model, sculpt, UV, texture and lookdev the whole asset for the sequence. This was a fantastic experience to solely take on an asset for such a big sequence in the film. The water simulation, ants and antman, animation, lighting and composting was done by other amazingly talented artists at Luma Pictures. Once the asset was completed, I then measured it out in real world length at Ant-Man's scale and it came to 2.2km long. Because of this the texture resolution through most of the pipe had to be very high. In the end we had around 70 UDIM maps for the whole asset.

Easter Egg: I managed to sneak my last name into the second image down!

Early on in development I also got to model out the air vent. I really wanted to do the look dev on this asset as well, but my time was all tied up in the water pipes.

The final major asset I worked on for the film was this one below. I did the modeling and the first pass of lookdev for this asset. I really like how these shots turned out.

Skull Abstract Sculpture

Hey guys

So I did this Coyote skull a little while ago and decided to turn it into a couple of abstract sculptures using zbrush's array tools.

A bit different from my usual work, but I really enjoyed doing these pieces, and they all had a really fast turnaround!

UV mapping tutorial - Maya 2015

Hey everyone

I quickly put together this video tutorial explaining how I do UV unwrapping in Maya 2015. It's a pretty quick gloss over but I think I mention the key points.

Enjoy.

Orc Blocking Update

Ok guys all of the blocking is done, apart from the weapon and adding a thousand rivets to the surfaces of the metal and leather but ah well. Now time to detail EVERYTHING!

Also for those who are interested in my process, this is how I started to block out the armor, concepting my ideas on layers in Photoshop first really helped me to push the design in the direction I wanted it to go.

Keep visiting my blog for more updates!

Just some work in progress on my Orc, adding a body and then onto the armor and such.
Lots more work to go on the body before that though.
Keep a look out for more updates of this guy soon.

Saturday, 2 February 2013

Hey guys and gals!

I have been busy with my new job for the past 4 weeks, but I have managed to keep something in the works, which I work on for a couple of hours each night and a bit more on the weekends. It's one of my childhood favorites! Leonardo from TMNT!

This version is quite stylized, it was the style which was in my head when I started the character, I am quite happy with how it has come along thus far. I plan to also make a custom base for him and get the model printed so I can have it on my desk at work!

I hope you like it!
This is about 75% complete.
Sword design is next!

Cyber Rabbit Posed

Hey everyone

So I finally managed to get the cyber rabbit posed...
Took a bit of screwing around but yea finally did it!

I also realised that I havn't posted a back shot yet, so here it is, this is the area I had to make up myself because I had no design to follow.
Thanks for checking out my work!

Think Tank

Hey everyone

Here is a short animation I made for Think Tank, a small business. It took roughly 2 weeks for me to make. I did the modelling, textures, lighting, rigging, rendering, animation and compositing. The concept of the film was by Michael Lai and the audio was done by my friend Ahmed Nashabe.

I hope you like it.

Cyber Rabbit Project

Hey!

So for the past week I have been working on one of my biggest piece's ever, trying to put together everything I have learnt in the past 2 years into one sculpture. I found this fantastic concept artwork painted by Constantin Maystrenko called Cyber Rabbit.

I am very close to completing the model, just a few more details and adjustments to go.
Here are some screen shots of the WIP.

I modeled the gun in Maya and now I will add the final details in ZBrush.

The next time I post here it should be of the finished model rendered in Vray. So Keep an eye on this page for that update.

Enjoy

Ando Bust Update

Hey there Yes another update, took a bit of a break from the model for a few days to refresh my eyes. I added more detail to the normal map because I belive it was loosing some due to the ss material. Dumbed down the saturation of the skin, to make it less 'pink'. Also removed the abient occlusion from the hair so it dosn't look as harsh.
Now time to try my hand at hair again...
